Empyral

Taken on 17 Oct, 2010 on the banks of the Kabini from a boat.

We waited for 15 mins for this glorious tusker to confirm that we meant no harm. He came out with a female to chomp on the sweet grass after digging it out with his feet.

Browsers

Taken on the boatsafari down the Kabini River, Karnataka on 18 January, 2010.

Browsers of a different kind!

The elephant on the right has her right leg lifted up. Elephants eat the grass after uprooting it by kicking at it. It's a wonderful sight and made me wonder why when there are so many tall trees around, an elephant even bothers to eat grass. It must be equivalent to a handful of puffed rice for it!

Green grass is sweet and juicy.

How do I know that? Well. that's my favourite pass-time in the wild and on lawns!.
Just try it!  Pluck a stem, peel back the blade to expose the yellowish green juicy part, take a bite and chew. Yummy!

It must be good for us. I have seen dogs eating grass when unwell in the tummy.

Retreat

Taken on 18 Jan, 2010 in the Nagarahole' Forests, Karnataka.

After the Brave One was satisfied we wouldn't hurt them, she went into the bushes and trumpeted for the troupe to follow her back into the forest. It was a wonderful exhibition of behaviour that we were fortunate to witness.

Fear Factor

Taken on 18 Jan, 2010 in the Nagarahole' Forests, Karnataka.

The frenzy that followed after the Brave One charges at us. The 2nd mother and calves rushed in the direction of the mud pool again and the Brave One ran to protect them. The little one at the back seems to be the calf of the Brave One. There was at one point a shuffle between the two calves when the bigger one pushed the little one down to the ground. Her cry brought the Brave One running to her defense.

Brave one

Taken on 17 Jan 2010, in the Nagarahole forest during an evening safari.

She is the leader of a group 4-of 2 mothers and 2 calves. As our jeep approached, she came forward with her trunk raised and then tried to distract us by running in the wrong direction. Far left was a mud ditch which the forest guards fill water in. They had just taken a nice mud bath and were covered with wet mud.
The elephant in the picture has a dislocated hip and walked with difficulty. It was amazing to watch her keep her troupe safe from us.
To be continued tomorrow...

Rogue

Taken on 18 Jan 2010 at the Nagarahole' Check Post, Karnataka.

The rogue elephant would have attacked if Ashwin got any nearer. The guards were all shouting at us. We were lucky I think that nothing untoward happened.

In Chains

Taken on 18 January, 2010 at the Nagarahole' Check Post, Karnataka.

These elephants are employed to control other elephants and to transport logs. They were being fed cooked raji balls fortified with minerals and vitamins. They have cried so much that the skin under the eyes has turned a darker shade. I love elephants but found these chained animals bringing tears to my eyes.
