White Wonder

Taken on 19 June 2010 at Bengaluru

Plumeria alba  or  White Plumeria, White Frangipani  or Champa
Frangipani is well-known for its intensely fragrant, lovely, spiral-shaped blooms which appear at branch tips. The tree itself is rather unusual in appearance.Plumeria flowers are most fragrant at night in order to lure sphinx moths to pollinate them. The flowers have no nectar, and simply dupe their pollinators. The moths inadvertently pollinate them by transferring pollen from flower to flower in their fruitless search for nectar. In modern Polynesian culture, it can be worn by women to indicate their relationship status - over the right ear if seeking a relationship, and over the left if taken. I have this tree at home and never knew that there was so much more to know about it than just the overpowering fragrance.

Nice picture..

Champa, nice looking and fragrant flower. I love them and have always had a tree or two in infront of my house. I was not aware that it doesn't have nectar. Thanks for filling in that one.

Great shot...the white contrasting with the dark background is an effective way of highlighting the simple beauty of these blossoms.
